THE NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDE

Although Budapest is a big city with 2 millions of inhabitants, the city center is easy to discover even on foot from our centrally located apartments. If you prefer not to walk too much, the very efficient public transport will take you everywhere. The following guide will show you our favorite places in the area of the apartments. It's a good start to discover the city, or a helpful aid if you are short on time. We did not include monuments and highlights like the Parliament, Castle District or Heroes Square, as you can find them easily on any guide and map. For more tips and detailed walking tours please check out our other guides!

WHERE TO EAT
WHERE TO EAT

1. MOST

ZICHY JENŐ UTCA 17 - 3 MINUTES FROM THE APARTMENTS

It is a bar-restaurant-club with a great atmosphere, and good food at a great price. Our favourites are Chicken Tikka Masala, their huge, home-made Hamburger, and they have ust built a Rotisserie for slow-cooked meats. Best to drink is the Zlaty Bazant Slovakian beer.

2. KÉT SZERECSEN ÉTTEREM

NAGYMEZŐ UTCA 19 - JUST A BLOCK AWAY

Great international and Hungarian cuisine in one of the oldest restaurants in the neighbourhood; nice ambient, kind staff and very delicious dishes, although not too hearty.

3. KÁDÁR ÉTKEZDE

KLAUZÁL TÉR 9. - 5-7 MINUTES FROM THE APARTMENTS

If you like to see something special, visit Kádár Étkezde – a little place of big fame, where nothing has changed since the 60’s. Traditional Jewish and Hungarian dishes, just like our grandmas use to make it. Their consommè (húsleves) and „sólet” (traditional Jewsih dish with beans, barley and smoked goose meat, available only on Saturdays) are unforgettable. Open only for lunchtime, closed on Sunday and Monday.

4. KŐLEVES - closed

KAZINCZY UTCA 37. - 10 MINUTES FROM THE APARTMENT

Another restaurant where you get great value for your money. Our favourites are their duck and goose dishes, but basically you can't make a mistake choosing from their often changing menu. They offer great vegetarian dishes too.

5. PESTI DISZNÓ - closed

NAGYMEZŐ U. 19 - RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING, NEXT TO OPERETT THEATRE

They have excellent meat dishes, and a great selection of wine and palinka. Lunch menu is available if you go early (by 13:30), you can eat very well for only 4 EUR. Their "Mangalica Pörkölt" and fish soup are our favourites.

6. GERBEAUD CONFECTIONERY

VÖRÖSMARTY TÉR 7-8 - 3 STOPS BY METRO LINE 1, OR A 25-MINUTE WALK

The legendary GERBEAUD is one of the largest, most traditional, and most famous café-confectioneries in Europe – it worth a visit for the sweet-toothed. Their emblematic sweet is the “Gerbeaud”, but their Sacher-cake is also especially delicious. It was founded in 1858, and still “shines with the cultured nostalgia of its original days”.

7. MAI MANÓ COFFE HOUSE

NAGYMEZŐ U. 20 - JUST BY THE ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING

It is very probable that it will become your everyday starting point while in Budapest; the Mai Manó is as nice as it seems from outside, or even nicer. Good coffee, homemade lemonade, and really the best croissant in town!

8. MENZA, LISZT FERENC TÉR

5 MINUTES FROM THE APARTMENT

The square is full of restaurants, the most touristic center of eating out especially from spring till fall, when the terraces are open. We recommend Menza, one of the oldest restaurant here: good food, nice atmosphere, friendly prices.

9. PIZZICA

NAGYMEZŐ UTCA - MOZSÁR UTCA CORNER

Excellent  roman-style pizza slice from Paolo's team, probably the best in town if you need a quick bite.

9. KISÜZEM

DOB UTCA - KIS DIÓFA UTCA CORNER - 7 MINUTES FROM THE APARTMENT - www.facebook.com/Kisuzem
A friendly pub of bohemian guests with cool concrete-wood interior, good beer, delicious food – and great atmosphere to spend the night out with friends.

10. KŐLEVES KERT

KAZINCZY UTCA 32 - 10 MINUTES FROM THE APARTMENT - https://koleveskert.business.site/
A little street packed with bars – good music and nice people to hang out. Kőleves Kert is the super friendly ruin-garden of the same-named restaurant. Kőleves Kert is only open in the summer season, while their indoor restaurant is open all year round.

11. SZIMPLA KERT

KAZINCZY UTCA 14 - 15 MINUTES FROM THE APARTMENT - https://szimpla.hu/

The first and most famous ruin pub, if you are interested in the genre don’t miss it – this is what the others copy. The beautiful Kazinczy utca, heart of the JewiSh district with synagoges and kosher restaurants, itself is worth a visit, too.

12. FOGASHÁZ / LäRM

AKÁCFA UTCA 51. - 10 MIN. FROM THE APARTMENT - http://www.fogashaz.hu/

Another ruinbar - garden - club complex, Fogasház is a real party center: the indoor and outdoor venues offer great music selections every day, while on the top floor a small but well-equipped techno club, the LäRM awaits you with top DJs and high-tech sound system.

13. BÉLA RESTAURANT & BAR

BARTÓK BÉLA ÚT 23. - https://www.belabudapest.com/

If you want to get out of the tourist's crowed you can check out some of Buda's places; more quiet but truly local; Béla is one of the best examples. It is very close to Gellért fürdő and not far from the Citadella and the Central Market Hall.

15. SZÉCHENY FÜRDŐ

VÁROSLIGET (CITY PARK), ÁLLATKERTI KRT. 9-11
The easiest to reach from my apartment, and probably the most popular too – the biggest open air spa in Europe, where you can relax all year.  You can reach it by taking the Metro 1 on Oktogon in the direction of “Mexikoi ut” and stop at “Szecheny Furdo”.

16. GELLÉRT FÜRDŐ

GELLÉRT TÉR, KELENHEGYI ÚT 4.
Wonderful art-deco spa, with hotel and open-air pools during the summer.  Take the Metro1 in front of Opera, go till “Deák Ferenc tér”, change either to tram line n 49 or 47, or to Metro line 4, and go till “Gellért tér” – the entrance is on the right side of Gellért Hotel. www.gellerrtbath.com

17. RUDAS FÜRDŐ

DÖBRENTEI TÉR 9.
Used to be the home of the genial Cinetrip parties, now it is “only” a thermal spa with an original Turkish Bath from the 16th century, a brand new wellness area, restaurant, and a rooftop terrace with terrific view. It has different opening days for women and for men, so it is useful to check out the website for updated info on the opening hours: http://www.rudasbaths.com/services.php

18. MARGIT-SZIGET / MARGIT ISLAND
The whole island is a beautiful park hosting spas, swimming pools, sport camps, and a great rubber-coated running track all around it (5,3 km). It’s the cities favorite running place, you will find joggers anytime working out there – it is a very nice and inspiring place to run. You can reach it by the tram n. 4-6 from Oktogon, in direction of Szell Kalman ter.

19. VÁROSLIGETI MŰJÉGPÁLYA - ICE TRACK OR POND
Ice-skating on a fantastic venue:  a public ice rink located in the City Park, between the Heroes' Square and the Vajdahunyad Castle. Opened in 1870, it is the largest and one of the oldest ice rinks in Europe. No need to bring your skates, you can rent one on spot. In summer months the area is filled up with water to create a pond where you can rent a b
oat too. Yu can easily reach it by Metro line 1 from Oktogon to Hősök tere (Heroes' Square). http://www.mujegpalya.hu
