SIGHTSEEING TOP-TIPS

How to reach Budapest's most wanted attractions from our apartments and what to check out on your way.

1. CASTLE DISTRICT

ROYAL PALACE, MATTHIAS CHURCH, FISHERMEN'S BASTION, VÁRKERT BAZAAR

The Castle District is a must-see due to it's distinctive historical atmosphere, and the stunning view it offers over the whole city. From our apartments you can take a walk (2 km) along Andrássy út, József Attila utca and through Chain Bridge to reach the little Funicular that will bring you up to the Royal Palace. The Palace - that has been razed and re-built a dozen of times since it's foundation in 1265 - today hosts two important museums (National Gallery and History Museum) and the National Széchenyi Library. Wander along the tiny streets and Tóth Árpád avenue, than head to the impressive, neo-Gothic Matthias Church that holds the only survived medieval royal tomb (King Béla III, ✝1196) and features a stunning tiled roof and stained glass windows. You can try Hungarian specialities at their bests in the Ruszwurm Confectionary in front of the church in Szentháromság utca - it's charming original biedermeier interior and fantastic, artigianal cakes (Zserbó or Ruszwurm Krémes for example) make it my absolute fav confectionary in town. Behind Matthias Church the Fishermen's Bastion, (built in 1902 and takes its name from the guild of fishermen that was responsible for defending this part of the city walls in the Middle Ages) offers a breathtaking view of Budapest. You can walk quickly back to Clark Adam square (Buda-side of the Chain Bridge) downhill on Hunyadi street. From Clark Ádám tér you can head South along the Danube to the newly renovated Várkert Bazaar, an amazing building complex and an ornamental garden at the base of Castle Hill projected by the architect of the Parliament, Ybl Miklós.

TIPS
&
HINTS

Don't want to walk too much? You can reach the Funicular (Clark Ádám square) from the apartment also by the bus 105 that stops at the corner of Nagymező utca and Andrássy út.

After visiting Várkert Bazaar continue South along the Danube towards Erzsébet bridge, under wich you can find the Rudas Drinking Hall; a hidden hall where 3 kinds of thermal water springs out and gets bottled and sold. They are smelly and warm but have various health benefits. South from the bridge the Rudas Thermal Bath awaits you - it features a sunbathing terrace with city view and an original Turkish Bath, operative since 1566.
